Emergency Kit

Your emergency kit should be compact enough to fit in a backpack or duffle bag but complete enough to support you during an unexpected event. Below is a checklist of recommended items.

Health & First Aid

  • First Aid Kit – Include allergy medicine (Benadryl), pain relievers/anti-inflammatory medication, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment, adhesive bandages, gauze, and eye drops.
  • Prescription medications – Pack at least a few days’ supply, along with a list of prescriptions.
  • Personal hygiene items – Hand sanitizer, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and other essentials.
  • Dust mask and eye protection – Protects against debris, smoke, or poor air quality.
  • Latex or nitrile gloves – Useful for first aid or handling debris safely.

Light & Communication

  • Flashlight – Keep fresh batteries; check and replace often.
  • Battery-operated NOAA weather radio – Stay informed about emergency alerts.
  • Whistle with lanyard – Use to signal for help if needed.
  • Cell phone charger/power inverter – Ensure you can stay connected during outages.

Identification & Money

  • Copies of important documents – Insurance, prescriptions, identification, and emergency contacts (stored in waterproof bags).
  • Extra cash – ATMs and credit cards may not work during power outages.

Comfort & Protection

  • Small blanket – Provides warmth and comfort.
  • Rain poncho – Stay dry during severe weather.
  • Lighter – For emergency fire-starting needs.

Food & Water

  • Bottled water – Rotate stock regularly to keep it fresh.
  • Ready-to-eat food – Energy bars and other non-perishable, easy-to-open items.

Additional Items for Pets & Children

If you have pets or young children, pack a second duffle bag with:

  • Food, water, and medications.
  • Identification and vaccination records.
  • Crates, leashes, or carriers for pets.
  • Comfort items and supplies specific to children’s needs.
